“1 GOAL: EDUCATION FOR ALL CAMPAIGN”: TOGETHER LET’S TAKE A STAND FOR THE EDUCATION THAT EVERY PERSON HAS A RIGHT TO!

Background

72 million children around the world do not go to school; denied their right to an education.  While a few children in South Africa enjoy well resourced and functional schooling (in mostly historically white, urban and middle class schools) the education system remains painfully divided and unequal. Our system of education is in a crisis, but change is not out of our reach. 2010 is a momentous year for South Africa. Not only is the World Cup taking place here, on African soil, for the first time ever, but with the world’s focus on us we have the opportunity as a nation to come together and mobilise around the project of education.  As a nation we have the chance to ensure that education is made a national priority; placed at the top of the national agenda.

WE can make a difference:  ‘1GOAL: Education for All’ campaign

“1GOAL: Education for All” campaign is a unique and exciting FIFA supported campaign based around the 2010 World Cup. The purpose of this international campaign is to galvanize support and energy around the World Cup to help ensure that after the last vuvuzela is blown at Soccer City in July 2010, a legacy of education is established in Africa; a legacy that will see every child in Africa being able to actualize their right of going to school. 1GOAL has already garnered the support of thousands of individuals, and innumerable high profile international and local politicians, celebrities and footballers such as State President Jacob Zuma, UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton,  Matthew Booth, Robinho, Marcel Desailly, Shakira, Jessica Alba – to name but a few .

Global Action Week, held annually by the Global Campaign for Education (from the 19th to 25th April 2010), is launched in over 100 countries simultaneously and aims to reach millions of people across the world. The purpose of the 2010 Action Week is to ensure the 1GOAL message of Education for All, as committed to in Dakar by world leaders, is kept.   1GOAL is collecting names and support from the public, footballers and celebrities to make a united plea to all governments to meet their target on 'Education for All'.

In South Africa we are campaigning for a quality public education for all in South Africa, as well as standing in solidarity with our brother and sisters around the world who are denied their right to learn.

We ask you to join this exciting campaign by taking part in and taking this lesson to as many people in South Africa as possible. For every person that takes part, their name, along with the names of the millions of other people taking part, will be sent to world leaders to make sure that they commit to their promise that by 2015 everyone will be able to receive a free, quality public education. By taking part in the lesson we are also saying that we care about education in South Africa and that everyone in South Africa must be given their right to a free quality public, education.
