The Call

Just over a year ago we came together as concerned South Africans, committed to public education, to issue a Call for public participation in education. Yet as the year passed we saw little progress in overcoming the challenges facing our education system. Poor South Africans have placed their hope in education, since the social system, as it exists, seems to be a dead-end for most people. It remains a fact, though, that our system of education is in a crisis and is failing our children. If left unaddressed this will not only undermine any potential for economic and social development, but also the vibrancy of our democracy.

‘n Bietjie meer as ‘n jaar gelede het ons as besorgde Suid-Afrikaners wat tot die openbare onderwys verbind is, bymekaar gekom om ‘n beroep vir publieke deelname in die onderwys te doen. Maar soos die jaar verbygegaan het, het ons bra min vordering rakende die uitdagings aan die stelsel gesien. Arme Suid-Afrikaners het hul vertroue in die onderwys geplaas, aangesien die sosiale stelsel, soos dit nou is, op die oog af vir hulle ‘n doodloopstraat is. Dit bly steeds ‘n feit dat ons onderwysstelsel in ‘n krisis verkeer en ons kinders benadeel. As ons hierdie saak nie onmiddelik en doeltreffend aanspreek nie, sal dit nie net alle potensiaal vir ekonomiese en maatskaplikke ontwikkeling in die wiele ry nie, maar ook die lewensvatbaarheid van ons demokrasie ondergrawe.
